Dependency does not imply a poor relationship, power can flow in any direction in an organization, applies to both groups and individuals. Power can be found in positions in organization or resources able to command. Legitimate power- derives from a person"s position in the organization, aka authority. Some people are more likely that others to invoke their legitimate power. Organizations differ in extent to which they emphasize and reinforce legitimate power (ex. When legitimate power works its usually because people have been socialized to accept its influence. Reward power- power holder can exert influence by providing positive outcomes or preventing negative ones, often backs up legitimate power. Coercive power- when power holder can exert influence using punishment or threat. Not perfectly correlated with legitimate power, problematic because of emotional side effects. Referent power- when power holder is well liked by others.
