Although cancer affects every age group, the majority occurs in people over 65 years of age. The incidence of cancer is higher in men than in women and higher in industrialized sectors and nations. Leading cause of cancer deaths in men: lung, prostate, and colorectal cancer. Leading cause of cancer deaths in women: lung, breast, and colorectal cancer. Cancer is a disease process that begins when an abnormal cell is transformed by the genetic mutation of the cellular dna. The cells infiltrate tissues, gaining access to lymph and blood vessels, which carry out the cells to other parts of the body (metastasis). Several patterns of cell growth exist: hyperplasia, metaplasia, dysplasia, anaplasia, neoplasia. The cell membrane of cancer cells contains proteins called tumor specific antigens (tsas). Typically the nuclei of cancer cells are large and irregularly shaped. Transport of tumor cells through the lymphatic circulation is the most common mechanism of metastasis.
