John locke on toleration: distinction b/t private and public matters. Establishing truth based on political authority and government. Natural rights to life, liberty and property must be granted but can be forfeited by attacking others. Ancien regime = old order system focusing on religious conformity, aristocratic privileges and political absolutism. Edict of nantes: granted freedom to hugenots, accepted catholicism as main religion. Fraternity: solidarity, common good goals > individual goals, Result of french constitution: limiting kings power, voting rights to males, no more three estates. Mercantilism : forbidding colonists to buy from or sell to anyone other than the mother country (used for colonies) Fable of the bees: bees shocked by own selfishness reform and act with others in mind (mandeville believes private interests benefit public good) Rights, 2) provide infrastructure and education, 3)defend country. Bentham: promote happiness through more voting b/c more voting = more opinions = better idea of happiness.
