Traditional authority: regarded as legitimate because it has always existed, patriarchalism, gerontocracy, keeps alive the values of respect and duty. Charismatic authority: power of personality, cults of personality, two problems: 1) has no limits 2) so closely linked to authority gure that cannot outlive its founder. Legal-rational authority: linked to clearly de ned set of rules, operates in most modern states, power is least likely to be abused, price could be a depersonalized and inhuman social environment. Beetham"s conditions of power: must be exercised according to established rules, must be justi ed in terms of shared beliefs, legitimacy must be expressed through consent on the part of the governed.
