Document Summary
Process that influences the direction, persistence, and strength of self-directed behaviour. Instincts (inherited predisposition to behave in specific and predictable way) motivate much of our behaviour. Homeostasis: body strives to maintain an internal physical equilibrium. 3 part mechanism: sensory mechanism for detection of stimuli, control centre to process information from sensors, response mechanism to react to the stimuli. Drive theory: biological need drive state activation of behaviours. Pull of external stimuli that have high value to individual to motivate behaviour in the absence of biological need. Intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation: extrinsic: behaviour for external reward or to avoid punishment, intrinsic: behaviour for inward advancement. Expectancy theory: expectancy x value = motivation: expectancy: strength of expectations of behaviour leading to a goal, value: placed on goal (incentive value) Overjustification hypothesis: extrinsic rewards to perform activities that they intrinsically enjoy may overjustify the behaviour and reduce intrinsic motivationi9i8u8uzccccccccccxxz.
