Personality: the biologically and environmentally determined characterisics within a person that account for disincive and relaively enduring paterns of thinking, feeling, and acing. * psychodynamic theorists look for the causes of behavior in a dynamic interplay of inner forces that oten conlict with one another. (focus on unconscious determinants of behavior) Worked with neurologist jean charcot who was treaing paients with conversion hysteria. Freud believed the paients symptoms were related to painful memories and repressed feelings, symptoms seemed to improve/ disappear once paients re-experienced the traumaic memories. These observaions convinced freud that an unconscious part of the mind exerts great inluence on behavior. He experimented with various techniques to access the unconscious mind, including hypnosis, free associaion, and dream analysis. Considered personality to be an energy system, he said insinctual drives generate psychic energy, which powers the mind and constantly presses for either direct or indirect release.
