Document Summary
Intelligence a socially constructed concept (not something that has concrete existence) Stated that people had inherited mental constitutions which made them more fit for thinking, superior to their less knowledgeable counterparts. Galton dismissed the fact that the more intelligent people came from more privileged backgrounds. Also measured the size of people"s skulls; he believed skull size resembled brain size, and thus intelligence. Binet: developed the test that would be the forerunner for all modern intelligence tests. Interesting in solving a practical problem; some children were not benefitting from normal public schooling. Educators wanted a way to determine how the child can learn, so special educational measures could be implemented asap. Made two assumptions about intelligence: mental abilities develop with age, the rate of acquiring intelligence is characterized by the person, and is relatively consistent overtime. Binet asked teachers what sorts of problems children would be solving at age 2, 3, 4, 5 etc.
