The characteristics of a person"s personality reflection: components of identity, distinguish people, caused by internal factors, behaviours fit together meaningfully. Considered personality to be an energy system. Instinctual drives generate psychic energy- powers the mind and constantly presses for either direct or indirect release. The conscious mind- consists of mental events we are aware of. The preconscious mind- memories, thoughts, feelings, and images we are unaware of at the moment but that can be called into conscious awareness. The unconscious mind- a dynamic realm of wishes, feelings, and impulses that lies beyond our awareness. + innermost core of personality, present at birth, source of all psychic energy. + no direct contact with reality and functions irrationally. + pleasure principle- id seeks immediate gratification/release, regardless of rational considerations and environmental realities. Freud divided personality into 3 separate but interacting structures.
