Instinct: inherited predisposition to behave in a specific and predictable way. Homeostasis: state of internal equilibrium that the body strives to maintain. Drive theory: disruptions to homeostasis produce states of internal tension that motivate organism to try to reduce this tension. Incentives: environmental stimuli that pull an organism toward a goal (e. g. a good grade can be an incentive to study) Expectancy theory: goal-directed behavior is determined by two factors: a person"s expectations that certain behaviors will lead to a goal, the value the individual places on the goal. Extrinsic motivation: performing an activity to obtain an external reward. Intrinsic motivation: performing an activity for its own sake. Giving people extrinsic rewards for activities reduces intrinsic motivation. Psychodynamic theories: conscious mental processes as well as unconscious motives and tensions guide how we act and feel. Self-actualization: the need to fulfill our potential, it is the ultimate human motive. Self-determination theory: focuses on competence, autonomy, and relatedness.
