Document Summary

Chapter 9 - the world of health care: places, procedures and people. Individuals who pay a lot of attention to their internal states are consistently more likely than others to notice a symptom. Current mood, personality traits and stress levels influence people"s response to symptoms. People in a good mood report fewer symptoms and fewer illness-related thoughts. People in a bad mood report more symptoms, are less likely to believe that any behaviours they engage in will relieve symptoms and assume they are more vulnerable to future illness. Stress is a personal factor that tends to elevate symptom reporting. Stressful periods in people"s lives can precipitate or aggravate the experience of symptoms. People who experience more stress are more vulnerable to illness. People who believe they are more likely to contract an illness will also attend more closely to their bodies.
