Aggression intentional behaviour aimed at causing either physical or psychological pain, when deciding if something was an act of intention it"s important to look at intention. Ex. a drunk driver hitting you is not aggression, someone trying to hit you with a beer bottle is. Hostile aggression an act of aggression stemming from feeling of anger and aimed at inflicting pain or injury. Instrumental aggression there is intention to hurt the other person but the hurting takes place as a means to some other goal. Ex. football defensive lineman will inflict pain on the blocker to get to the quarterback because that pain will get him to his goal (the qb). How if the blocker makes a side remark and the defensive player gets mad he might inflict more pain then is necessary to get the. That is when it has switched from instrumental to hostile.
