Document Summary

Chapter 10 gendered intimacies; communication, friendship, love, and sex. Robert lewis developed four barriers to emotional intimacy among men: competition, the need to be in control (forbids self-disclosure and openness, homophobia, lack of skills and positive role models for male intimacy. Division of emotional labour; women were expected to supply men with the emotional needs which they have: men learned to be instrumental; focused on tasks/shared activities rather than self-discourse in their relationships with other men. Men seek companionship, not intimacy, in their friendships: women learned to be expressive; prone to emotional communication. Companionate marriage was a relatively new phenomenon: but, romantic love was expressed as something outside of marriage. Was seen as socially disruptive, a threat to the power of the church: now, romantic love is seen as the basis for marriage, sexuality, and family. Strong emphasis on the gendered roles which men and women are supposed to play now that compassionate love is more accepted.
