Virtually every society has a gendered division of labour. The phenomenon of the public and private sphere is relatively new: the doctrine of separate spheres was nor firmly established until the 19th century. In societies in which women"s work is less valued (more traditional societies) women do more work than the men do. The changing gender composition of the labour force. In the 20th century, the percentage of both women and men entering the labour force increased but women"s rate of increase far outpaced men"s: the longitudinal trend for women is one of consistent increased participation. In recent years, women with children at home have been one of the fastest growing groups in the labour force: this increase has been true for all races and ethnicities in canada and the usa. Women"s entry into the labour force has taken place at every level (low-paid sales work through all the major professions) Today, the norm is the dual-earner couple.
