Definition of family seems self-evident but it is not easy to capture what a family is or is not. Standard definition group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption . Canada tends to divide families into nuclear and extended forms. Nuclear family is co-residing unit of parent(s) dependent children. Family of orientation is family into which a person is born (or adopted) typically consists of co-residing parents (or a lone parent) and dependent children. Family of procreation is the family formed when an individual marries (or lives common-law) and has children of his or her own (or adopts them); co-residing couple (or long parent) with dependent children. A couple living common-law may be of opposite or same sex. Children in a census family include grandchildren living with their grandparents but no parents present.
