Sociology 3306A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Logistic Regression, Multicollinearity, Fahrenheit
Document Summary
Prerequisite: ascertaining whether the values of the focal coincide with the focal iv. Bivariate analysis yields an estimate of the total or gross association. Used to draw conclusions about the causal relationships among constructs for a population. Step 1: the process by which one construct affects another construct is translated into a hypothesis that can be tested empirically (through deductive reasoning) Step 2: testing the hypothesis - based on the results, inductive reasoning is used to draw conclusions about the probable relationship between constructs of the population. Statistical test = null hypothesis, stating that variables are not associated with one anther - a hypothesis we hope to reject. Failing to reject null hypothesis - constructs are likely not related to one another. If evidence is lacking for one particular case, it is unlikely that a relationship exists for the general case. The elaboration model uses two complementary analytic strategies to strengthen inference of causality.
