Sociology 4442F/G Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Exhibitionism, Fax, Zoophilia
Document Summary
Usually victims of serial killers die more violently than other murderers. They are so dangerous because we understand so little about their actual motivations, lives, etc. The one thing we know about serial killers is that we can not fit them into one single behavioural profile. Only 7% have military or law enforcement background. Most of the monikers (nicknames) for male serial killers were designed to create an aura of mystery and fascination. Approximately 96% of serial killers started after 1900: most offenders were between 1975 and 2004 (50%) and from 200-2014, it has died down. Potential offenders can now use the internet to vent sexual fantasies instead of getting victims: baby boomers are aging and homicide rates are slowing, much greater public awareness of sexual preferences. A dramatic decrease in homicides in the united states belies the reality that serial murder is being redefined. Serial killing is not as high as mass murderers (not decreasing- sandy hook)
