In the end as a result they could only gain respect power and money by dealing drugs such as crack, marijuana and heroin in their own ethnic community. the result of this has been a spiral of addiction, violence , murder, crime and prison: to summarize the author is trying to argue transformation from the manufacturing to service employment is much more culturally disruptive that the already revealing statistics of reductions in income, employment, unionization and workers benefits would indicate.
