Document Summary

Ps261 chapter 2 notes elicited behaviour, habituation and sensitization. Elicited behaviour behaviour that occurs in response to a specific stimulus. Two types of elicited behaviour that are unlearned: habituation and sensitization. Simplest form of elicited behaviour is a reflex. Reflexes involve a precise relationship between an external stimulus and the corresponding response, and the specificity of this relationship is caused by how the nervous system is organized. Rarely see the response without the stimulus present. In vertebrates, reflexes are mediated by as little as three neurons that together, constitute the reflex arc. Sensory neurons, known as afferent neurons, are engaged by environmental stimuli, and they send information toward the spinal cord. Motor neurons, known as efferent neurons, receive information from the spinal cord and transmit it to the muscles to perform the reflexive response. The interneuron is the neuron that connects the efferent to the afferent neurons.
