Document Summary

Acceptance sampling- form of sampling to lots or batches of items before or after a process to judge its conformance with standards. Rejected lots -> 100% inspection or return to supplier for credit or replacement. P is the proportion of defectives in the lot, bep = cost of inspection / cost of later repair. P < bep, p is variable = acceptance. P < bep, p is sta(cid:271)le, don"t inspe(cid:272)t. Factors favouring acceptance over 100% : short time frame, destructive testing required, fatigue or boredom caused by inspecting large numbers -> inspection errors. Sampling plan specifies sample size, number of samples and acceptance/ rejection criteria. One random sample drawn from lot and every item examined; either good or defective. Samples that fall within an inconclusive range; between lower and upper bound, take a second sample and compare to a different number. Rejected if cumulative defects higher than range. Two considerations: number of samples needed and total number of observations required.
