Traditional organization designed for efficiency = emphasizes vertical communication and control. Centralized decision making: problems/decisions funnelled to top levels of hierarchy for resolution. Contemporary learning organization = emphasizes horizontal communication and coordination. Decentralized decision making: decision-making authority pushed down to lower organizational levels. Linkage: extent of communication and coordination among organizational elements. Vertical linkages: used to coordinate activities between top and bottom of organization, and are designed primarily for control of organization. Employees at lower levels should carry out activities consistent with top-level goals, and top execs must be informed of activities and accomplishments at lower levels.
