Theories of modernity emerged int eh 1950s and early 1960s prompted by the decline of the old colonial empires. There are different types of ldcs and swarbroke outlines these as: Least developed countries: average incomes less that per year, literacy rates of less than 20 per cent and little industrial production. There are 42 of these countries, often termed the fourth world . Developing countries: beyond the level of least developed but still relatively poor and non-industrilized. Newly industrilizaed countries (nics): these countries share characteristics of both less developed and and developed worlds. Human development index integrates welfare and economic aspects to produce a more holistic picture of a nation"s status. The emergence of alternative forms of tourism, such as ecotourism, with an emphasis on planning for a better future.
