Document Summary

Environmental protection agency (epa) - the main government department in charge of natural resource stewardship in the us. In october 2011, earth reached a population of 7 billion humans. Took nearly 10,000 years to hit 1 billion. Took 200 years to add another 6 billion. Most experts say that population growth will continue until it approaches the 10 billion mark, perhaps around 2100, at which point it is expected to level off. According to demographers, like massimo livi-bacci, almost all future population growth is expected to occur in the global south, and the number is supposed to level off as the developing world becomes richer and more developed. The wealthier people become, the fewer children they have. Advances in health care have substantially increased the survival rate for children in the west. Increased career opportunities, access to birth control, legal rights, and socioeconomic resources for women have translated, on average, into their having fewer children than previous generations did.
