Chapter 15—Treating Disorders
Insight therapies (talk therapy)
1. Psychoanalysis: treatment designed to
uncover the unconscious conflicts causing
anxiety
• Free association (spontaneous expression
of thoughts/feelings)
• Talk without feeling censored
• 1st thing that comes to your mind
• Resistance (client’s unconscious attempts
to hinder therapy)
• IE silence, changes topics, defensiveness
• Transference (unconscious transfer of
emotions etc. about someone else, onto
therapist)
• Therapist becomes the target. This is progress because
clients can express fear etc. without retaliation

2. Client Centred Therapy (treatment
designed to resolve incongruence that causes
disorder)
• Genuineness: trust. being honest vs fake.
• Unconditional positive regard- anything
you say is ok—Acceptance no matter
what. Value what client is feeling,
regardless of how therapist feels
• Empathy: sensitive,
• Active listening
uh huh I see Head nodding
• Paraphrasing: reflect back on the client what they have
said. He’d paraphrased it back onto her. To see themselves in
a mirror, to realize the issue. Will never say, this is your
problem.
