Document Summary
There is more to behaviour than traits alone. Situationism is the the notion that behaviour is governed primarily by the variables in a given situation rather than by internal traits. He believed human behaviour was completely shaped by environmental factors. He saw personality as simple a certain consistency in what he called response tendencies. We approach life in a certain way because some of our behaviours have been rewarding while others have not. We tend to favour and repeat responses that have brought us fortune ex: A trait theorist might look at your presence in college or university as some combination of intelligence, conscientiousness and perhaps a little neuroticism. Skinner would say you studied because you found academic achievement to be rewarding or because it kept your parents happy. Because these outcomes were motivating, you developed a general response tendency to persist at studying which led you to respond consistently and successfully in academic situations.
