Document Summary

Chapter 2 + app b: research/statistics in psychology. Hypothesis: statement of relationship between two variables (anything measureable that is controlled/observed in the study) Examples of theories: money spent on pets, pets are family, pets make people feel good. Hypothesis: pets and blood pressure are two variables, research article is saying pets decrease blood pressure. Pets does not include fish, rabbit, but only cats and dogs adopted from animals shelters. By creating specific definitions of measurement, we avoid ambiguity. Hypothesis: adopting a dog or cat from a shelter decreases blood pressure . Manipulate something (independent variable ex. adopting dog/cat) Control other things: control group all else is equal, random assignment. Measure an outcome (dependent variable ex. blood pressure) Goal: to make control group equal to experimental group in every way except iv (ex. If all else is equal, then our manipulation caused outcome making one person take a drug and another a placebo/sugar pill)
