PS262 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2 and 3: Electromagnetic Spectrum, Test Light, Ciliary Muscle
Document Summary
Chapter 2 & 3: intro to vision and neural processing. The energy in the electromagnetic spectrum can be described by its wavelength the distance between the peaks of the electromagnetic waves. Visible light the energy within the electromagnetic spectrum that humans can perceive. For humans and some animals, the wavelength of visible light is associated with the different colours of the spectrum (short wavelengths = blue, middle = green, long = yellow, orange, and red) Two types of visual receptors: rods and cones. Outer segments are part of the receptor that contains light sensitive chemicals called visual pigments that react to light and trigger electrical signals. Signals from receptors flow through the network of neurons that make up the retina and emerge from the back of the eye in the optic nerve. Peripheral retina contains both rods and cones, but contains more rods than cones.
