Document Summary

Week 1 readings: introduction to perception. Four categories: stimulus, electricity, experience and action, and knowledge. Exists both externally and internally. Stimulus is transformed into another form an image on the retina: this image is a representation of the object. Everything we perceive is based on electrical signals in our nervous system. Processing: neural processing: involves interactions between neurons. Could perceive but cannot recognize. Does not really have a beginning point or ending point in the perceptual process. Knowledge: any information that the perceiver brings to a situation. Is placed above the circle because it can affect a number of the steps in the perceptual process. Rat- man demonstration shows how recently acquired knowledge can influence perception. Top- down processing (knowledge- based processing) refers to processing that is based on knowledge (e. g. , what a person knows about an object) Some situations where there is no top- down processing required (simple flash of light) How to approach the study of perception.
