PS263 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Brainstem, Postganglionic Nerve Fibers, Preganglionic Nerve Fibers
Document Summary
Consists of neurons that receive info from and send commands to the heart, intestines, and other organs. Network of nerves that prepare organs for vigorous activity. Chains of ganglia to the left and right of spinal cord"s central regions. Ganglia connected by axons to the spinal cord. A few axons close to sweat glands release acetylcholine. Also known as craniosacral system, consists of cranial nerves and nerves from sacral spinal cord. Ganglia are not arranged in a chain near spinal cord. Long, preganglionic axons extend from spinal cord to parasympathetic ganglia close to each organ. Shorter, postganglionic fibers extend from sympathetic ganglia into the organs themselves. Since ganglia is not linked, they act more independently. B/c flow of sinus fluids is a parasympathetic response, drugs that block parasympathetic activity or increase sympathetic activity are used to treat colds. Brainstem: consists of medulla and pons, midbrain, and some forebrain structures.
