The Peripheral Nervous System
-made up of the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord
Somatic Nervous System SNS:
-interact w external environment and carry sensory info to CNS
-carry motor info back out
-serves voluntary actions
-the neurotrasmitter at neuromuscular junctions in somatic nerve system is acetylcholine
which acts on receptors that excite the muscle
Autonomic Nervous System ANS:
-internal bodily environment monitored and controlled by ANS
-regulates visceral/involuntary functions (heart rate, blood pressure etc)
-many psychoactive drugs have simultaneous effects in brain and on ANS
-electrical activity in vagus nerve causes acetylcholine to be released into heart muscle
(since a different type of receptor is found in the heart, this chemical inhibits heart muscle
contraction)
ANA further divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic branches:
1) Sympathetic:
-norepinephrine is the transmitter at the end organ (increases heart rate)
-interconnected and acts like a unit to open bronchi, reduce blood supply to skin,

Document Summary

Made up of the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. Interact w external environment and carry sensory info to cns. The neurotrasmitter at neuromuscular junctions in somatic nerve system is acetylcholine which acts on receptors that excite the muscle. Internal bodily environment monitored and controlled by ans. Regulates visceral/involuntary functions (heart rate, blood pressure etc) Many psychoactive drugs have simultaneous effects in brain and on ans. Electrical activity in vagus nerve causes acetylcholine to be released into heart muscle (since a different type of receptor is found in the heart, this chemical inhibits heart muscle contraction) Ana further divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic branches: sympathetic: Norepinephrine is the transmitter at the end organ (increases heart rate) Interconnected and acts like a unit to open bronchi, reduce blood supply to skin, increase heart rate, reduce stomach motility. Drugs that activate sympathetic branch are sympathomimetic drugs: parasympathetic:
