PS276 Chapter 4: Conflict and Behaviour Genetics
Document Summary
Teens and parents have similar beliefs about such things as the importance of hard work, ambitions, personal characteristics they feel are important and desirable. Diversity within the adolescent population more striking than differences b/w generations. However theres often a gap b/w teens and adults when it comes to personal taste (esp music, dress) Basic values develop gradually and are shaped early, but preferences for superficial things are more transitory and subject to current fads/more likely to be influenced by friends. Curfews, leisure time activities, clothing, cleanliness of room. Conflict over these mundane matters less frequent in ethnic minority than whites. Parents view many issues as matters of right and wrong whereas adolescents define them as matters of personal choice (defining contention) Adolecents draw distinctions between parental rules they think parents have the right to make and rules they think are out of bounds. With time adolescents see more issues as matters of personal choice worldwide.
