Broadening of intellectual capabilities during adolescence provides new ways of thinking and kids are able to think in systematic ways about hypothetical and future events. Adolescents become more able to imagine their possible selves. Ability/tendency to consider long term consequences of decisions. Facing decisions about place in society necessitates questions about who they are and where they"re headed. 3 approaches to question of how individual"s sense of identity changes over adolescence: emphasizes self conceptions. Traits and attributed individuals see in themselves: emphasizes self esteem. How positively/negatively they feel about themselves: emphasizes changes in sense of identity. Sense of who one is, where one has come from, and where one is going. Differences within groups of males and females more substantial than differences b/w them. However the magnitude of sex differences in interests and attitudes is smaller than most people think. Most consistent sex differents are that boys more physically aggressive, and females more socially aggressive.
