Growth of cognitive autonomy encouraged by develop of emotional and behavioural independence as well. Development of cognitive autonomy occurs later (18-20) than emotional or behavioural autonomy. Emotional autonomy allows adolescents to look at parents" views more objectively. Strong sense of cognitive autonomy = more maturity in identity development and self awareness. Ultimate decisions less important than reasoning behind answers. Characterized by reference to external and physical events (rewards and punishments) Focus on how individual will be judged by others for behaving in certain way. Importance given to roles and expectations in society. Individuals behave properly bc they receive approval of others/maintain social order. Emerges during adolescent or young adult years, is relatively rare. Moral duty to abide by society"s rules only when they support and serve moral ends. More common in children raised in authoritative families. Ovement into higher stages occur when adolescent"s reasoning is predominantly at one stage but partially at the next higher one.
