Adolescents who are unpopular w same sex peers especially harmed by early serious dating perhaps bc it makes relationship seem excessively important. Adolescents who begin dating early and who have multiple partners experience drop in quality of relationships over time and are more likely to be victims of dating violence. However this could just be a symptom of pseudo maturity which is associated w wide range of psychological problems. Link b/w early dating and poor mental health may be related to pressure on girls to engage in sex before they are ready. Since boys begin dating later and often date younger girls, beginning to date is less anxiety provoking. Adolescents who do not date at all show signs of retarded social development and feelings of insecurity.
