In dsm-5, the term mixed features requires specifying whether a predominately manic or depressive episode is present, then noting if enough symptom of opposite polarity is present to meet the mixed features criteria. Importance of temporal course (patterns of recurrence and remittance) makes the goals of treating somewhat different from those with other psych disorders. Clinical descriptions: most easily recognized mood disorder is major depressive disorder. In first year following an episode, risk of recurrence is 20% Rises as high as 40% in second year. Median lifetime number of episodes is four to seven (25% experienced 6 or more) Median duration of recurrent episodes is four to five months, somewhat shorter than the average length of the first episode. These people, who suffer from both major depression episodes and persistent depression are said to have double depression.
