Psycholinguistics is the study of how people comprehend, produce, and acquire language. Linguistics is the branch of science that studies the origin, structure and use of language. Tactic knowledge is the knowledge of how to perform various acts. Explicit knowledge is knowledge of the processes or mechanisms used in this act. Ie baseball player can throw a 90 mile pitch but doesn"t fully understand the mechanisms behind the pitch. 4 areas of language knowledge include: semantics- meaning of sentences, syntax- grammatical arrangement of words in a sentence, phonology- system of sounds in language, pragmatics- social rules in language use. Garden path sentence- lead to believe a certain idea throughout sentence until the end makes you backtrack and reinterpret. Indirect requests are more polite than demanding, forces us to consider language in a social context. The study of relationships between language and social behaviour is called sociolinguisitcs.
