Document Summary
The life satisfaction index lsi was developed with 177 people between ages of 50-90 using in depth interviews to elicit responses from which various dimensions of ife satisfaction might be scored. 5 dimensions proved to be scorable: zest vs apathy, resolution and fortitude, congruence between desired and achieved goals, self concept, and mood tone. For each dimension, scoring was on 5 pt scale (5 = positive end of dimension) Lsi is self report questionnaire with 20 agree/disagree statements. Satisfaction with life scale has been adapted from lsi to measure satisfaction in other periods of life and correlates with lengthier assessments of life satisfaction. Complicated bc cross sectionary studies don"t rule out cohort differences. Results are somewhat inconsistent and vary across samples, across time periods, and across different dimensions of life satisfaction. Ex life satisfaction in old age is lower in poorer than in more affluent nations. It was also lower in earliest generation of research than more recent studies.
