Document Summary
Races are social classifications, not biological categories. People are inclined to think that their own race is superior to others. No such thing as a pure race. Physical or cultural differences can lead to unfair treatment. Ethnic work: the way people construct their ethnicity. Identify with one another on basis of common ancestry and cultural heritage. People who are singles out for unequal treatment and who regard themselves as objects of collective discrimination. Indigenous women are 5-7x more likely than any other women to die as a result of violence. Racist/sexism stereotypes deny the dignity and worth of indigenous women. Dominant group: greater power, privileges, social status. Minority group develops in 2 ways: political boundaries expansion, through migration. Prejudice: attitudes or prejudgement (less seen among educated, young people) Discrimination: an action of unfair treatment directed at someone (based off race, age, sex, sexual preference, religion, politics)
