Chapter 4: establishing the structure of a business: identify four broad trends in the changing nature of organizational design. The traditional, bureaucratic organizational structure emphasizes factors such as job specialization, a formal hierarchy of authority, a clear system of control, rules and regulations to guide behaviours. The reason that we need bureaucratic design is it"s predictable and reliable. flat organizations: delayering of organizational hierarchies: wider span of control; the elimination of hierarchical layers, often involving downsizing. Benefits including increasing speed of decision making, react faster to the changing environment, lower levels of the organizations more involved in the decision- making process. Integrated organizations: less focus on the need for unity of command and clear lines of authority, unimportant to maintain the distinct boundaries between levels in the hierarchy, individuals and departments, organizational members and individuals external to the organization. Cross-functional teams: work groups that bring together members from various part of the organization.
