Motivation is the process that accounts for an individual"s intensity, direction, and persistence of effort toward reaching a goal. The degree of persistent effort that one directs towards a goal is functional motivation. Persistence or the extent to which one keeps at a task. Direction or the extent to which one applies effort and persistence towards a meaningful goal. Money is the most commonly used reward in organizations. A 2010 survey of canadian employees found that 46% believed they were underpaid. But money is not the top priority for many employees, many emphasize relationships in the workplace. Developing rewards programs is a complex process. Maslow"s hierarchy of needs: physiological, safety, society, esteem, self-actualization. Unhappy relationship with employee"s supervisor interesting work. The theory that individuals act based on their evaluation of whether their effort will lead to good performance, whether good performance will be followed by a given outcome, and whether that outcome is attractive.
