Most of it lies within the tropics and is dominated by the warm seas and moisture-bearing winds of tropical latitudes. The pacific island groups are made up of more than 20000 islands (melanesia, micronesia, and polynesia) Includes fiji, the solomon islands, vanuatu, and new caledonia. Papua and new guinea are known as melanesia. Nauru, kiribati, palau, the marshall islands, the federated states of micronesia, guam, and the northern mariana islands are known as micronesia. Samoa, tonga, the cook islands, wallis and futuna, easter island, tuvalu, niue, Tokelau, and french polynesia/tahiti are known as polynesia. (sometimes defined as including hawaii). Countries in this region share an orientation to the ocean, relatively low populations, and world- famous, dramatic coastal and mountain landscapes. This region is also geographically rich in minerals.
