Document Summary

Researching health: knowledge of paradigms, methodologies, and methods. This chapter gives us a scope on knowledge paradigms in health studies. A knowledge paradigm can be described as the beliefs and assumptions that one has about what knowledge is and how it is formed. Knowledge paradigms helps us establish queries that are carried out when new knowledge is learned or required and it also sets limitations on what new knowledge we learn. Furthermore, there are three approaches associated with the research and inquiry of health studies, which are: positivism, idealism and realism. Positivism involves developing general principles, belief and knowledge that can be directly experienced and verified between independent observers. Idealism is an approach, which concerns an individual s analysis of the world. This approach would include methods such as, open-ended interviews, detailed observations and analyses of documents and other texts. Realisms deal with how the society and political environment impacts the world and the knowledge in the world.
