Two of the most common research categories. Researchers can gauge health of the populations by comparing the recordings from year to year. This is descriptive bc investigators are gathering info about naturally occurring events. Causal factor is the mode of strength training; effect is the change in levels of strength. This is experimental bc investigators actively create two different situations/environments and then determine if change occurs. We could obtain a sample of first- through sixth-grade children by year (referred to as cohorts) and measure their body fat. We could then compare results among age groups to see if there are any differences in body fat in children as they mature. Longitudinal: the same subjects are observed or measured repeatedly over a period of months or years, primary advantage is that developmental changes can be assessed more precisely over time. Although animals may be used in some research, the findings are used to describe many types of behaviour, including human behaviour.
