Refers to the cognitive rehearsal of physical skills. Is effective especially when combined with physical practice: neuromuscular theory. When mentally practicing a motor skill, motor system is responding even without actual stimuli, sending same instructions to musculature that it normally would except below the threshold necessary for physical movement so you"re (cid:374)ot actually (cid:373)ovi(cid:374)g. Activated the motor system as it would during movements and thus benefits performance: cognitive theory. Suggests that mental practice helps the learner better understand the goals of the movement. Term science derived from latin word scientia which means having knowledge. Development of scientific knowledge has several levels relating to a behaviour/thing: description. Research to describe is important since it can be used to make comparisons with past measurements. Enables us to detect trends and identify unusual occurrences: prediction. Important to advancement of knowledge is ability to demonstrate relationships among variables. If behaviours/events are found to be systematically related to one another, prediction becomes possible: control.
