Document Summary

Emotion: a response of the whole organism: 1. physiological arousal (heart pounding), 2. expressive behaviors (quickened pace), 3. conscious experience (thoughts of kidnapping, feelings of panic) James-lange theory: experience of emotion comes from our awareness of our physiological responses to emotion-arousing stimuli. We feel frightened because our heart is racing & we are shaking. Rst comes conscious awareness, then the feeling. Canon-bard theory: arousal & emotion occur simultaneously: Cannon-bard theory: emotion arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers 1. physiological responses & 2. experience of emotion. A pounding heart does not cause fear & fear does not cause a pounding heart. If this were true, spinal cord injuries shouldn"t cause a change in emotion experience. However, people with spinal cord injuries don"t feel the same amount of anger (without feeling of their heart beating) therefore, our bodily response feed our experienced emotions. Schachter and singer two-factor theory: arousal + label = emotion.
