Document Summary

Module 56: biomedical therapies & preventing psychological disorders biomedical therapy: prescribed medication or procedures that act directly on person"s physiology. Psychopharmacology: the study of the effects of drugs on mind and behavior. Double-blind procedure: some given drug, some given placebo to test if drug actually works or if its a placebo effect. Antipsychotic drugs: treat schizophrenia by blocking of dopamine (overactive dopamine causes hallucinogens). Can be addictive and withdrawal symptoms increase anxiety. Antidepressant drugs: treat depression, anxiety, ocd, are ssri"s (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors). Can cause weight gain, dry mouth, dizzy if not taken through a patch. Aerobic exercise does as much good as drugs. Cognitive therapy helps too and reducers of relapse. Placebos accounted for 75% of the active drugs effect. Mood-stabilizing medications: for bipolar disorder, lithium (simple salt) eases disorder and to a lesser extent, lifts depression. Places with natural occurring lithium in drinking water have lower rates of suicide and crime.
