Document Summary
People enter therapy in crisis: depressed ppl get better no matter what they do. Want to believe: convince yourself the time and money wasn"t for nothing. Clients speak kindly of therapists: even if problems remain, good things are said. Success story repeat: same person visit different psychologists due to only a temporary relief in crisis, each psychologist thinks illness is gone at the end. Through meta-analysis, those without therapy often improve, but those with therapy are more likely to improve (more quickly and less relapse). Meta-analysis: a procedure for statistically combining the results of many different research studies. The more speci c the problem the greater the hope (panic attacks vs. depression) Some therapies are ineffective and even harmful. Evidence-based practice: therapists make decisions about treatment based on research evidence, clinical expertise & knowledge of the client. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (emdr): recalling traumatic scenes by triggering eye movement.
