Prognosis: probable course of illness: deviance from the norm, maladaptive behavior (interferes with ability to function in society, personal distress (including suffering and unhappiness) Is a spectrum, not just mentally ill vs not (dividing line is based on deviation from statistical average) Stereotypes: psychological disorders are incurable (not true for all), they are violent (not true always, a stereotype because these incidents show up in media), they are bizarre (can"t always be distinguished from normal) Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders (dsm-5) used for classifying disorders necessary to simplify and create order, research, and plan treatment: axis i = clinical syndromes, axis ii = personality/intelligence disorders. 1 year prevalence of psychological disorders = 10%, women think, men drink men more often have substance abuse problems than women.
