Document Summary

Classical conditioning (aka pavlovian conditioning) is a type of learning in which a stimulus acquires the capacity to evoke a response that was originally evoked by another stimulus. Pavlov was studying the role of saliva in the digestive processes of dogs when he stu(cid:373)(cid:271)led o(cid:374)to (cid:449)hat he (cid:272)alled (cid:862)ps(cid:455)(cid:272)hi(cid:272) (cid:396)efle(cid:454)es(cid:863) He noticed that dogs accustomed to the procedure would start salivating before the meat powder was presented. For instance, they would salivate in response to a clicking sound made by the device that was used to present the meat powder. The key is that the tone started out as a neutral stimulus. What pavlov had demonstrated was how learned associations which were viewed as the basic building blocks of the entire learning process were formed by events in an o(cid:396)ga(cid:374)is(cid:373)"s e(cid:374)(cid:448)i(cid:396)o(cid:374)(cid:373)e(cid:374)t. B: terminology and procedures the unconditioned stimulus (ucs) is a stimulus that evokes an unconditioned response without previous conditioning. (meat powder)
