Document Summary

The cognitive component of an attitude is made up of the beliefs that people hold about the object of an attitude. The affective component of an attitude consists of the emotional feelings stimulated by an object of thought. The behavioural component of an attitude consists of predispositions to act in certain ways toward an attitude object. Attitudes vary along several crucial dimensions, including their strength, accessibility, and ambivalence. Definitions of attitude strength differ, but they generally view strong attitudes as ones that are firmly held (resistant to change) and durable over time, and that have a powerful impact on behaviour. The accessibility of an attitude refers to how often one thinks about it and how quickly it comes to mind. Attitude accessibility is correlated with attitude strength, as highly accessible attitudes tend to be strong, but the concepts are distinct and there is no one- to-one correspondence.
