Document Summary
Language consists of symbols that convey meaning, plus rules for combining those symbols, that can be used to generate an infinite variety of messages: language is symbolic, language is systematic, language is generative, language is structured. Phonemes: the smallest speech units in a language that can be distinguished perceptually. Semantics: area of language concerned with understanding the meaning of words and word combinations. Meaning of a word consists of both denotation and connotation. Syntax: a system of rules that specify how words can be arranged into sentences. Rule of syntax: sentence must have both a subject and verb. At around 8 months infants begin to recognize and store common word forms. 13 months infants begin to utter sounds that correspond to words. They can comprehend more words than they can produce. Fast mapping is the process by which children map a word onto an underlying concept after only one exposure. Fast mapping allows for a rapid growth of vocabulary.
